Idiopathic Hypersomnia.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms may include sleeping more than 11 hours during the day, having a hard time waking up, struggling doing normal daily activities, not feeling rested after sleep or naps and having brain fog.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made by ruling out other common sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea. The patient is asked to fill an epworth sleepiness scale and a sleep diary. Then, a polysomnogram may be conducted in a sleep center and on the next day multiple sleep latency tests can measure sleepiness during daytime.

Treatment

Idiopathic hypersomnia has no known cause, which makes it hard for treating. A regular nighttime sleep schedule is usually advised and stimulant medication could help during the day.
