Irritability is a feeling of agitation, frustration and stress. In adults, irritability could be a part of a medical condition such as menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome and hyperthyroidism or mental conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Physical causes for irritability may include sleep deprivation, low blood sugar, ear infections, diabetes, flu and respiratory disorders. Medications could also cause irritation, as well as drug and alcohol abuse. Withdrawal from nicotine and caffeine also cause irritability. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history, interviewing the patient on how he or she feels and physical examination. Further evaluation may include blood and urine analysis. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include treating the underlying cause, therapy, and lifestyle changes such as exercise, and sleep hygiene.
