Spasms of muscles

A spasm of the muscle refers to an involuntary, sudden movement in one muscle or a group of muscles. It may also be referred to as a twitch. Muscle spasms are common and typically affect the feet, hands, arms, thighs, abdomen and intercostal muscles. It may be a result of stress, fatigue, exercise and dehydration. It is more common in older people, athletes, obese people and pregnant women. Underlying medical causes of muscle spasms may include thyroid problems and nerve disorders. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include staying hydrated, massages, stretching, using a heating pad or ice packs. If there's an underlying disease causing it, it should be treated.
