What is it?

Post concussion syndrome (PCS) is a condition that is usually associated with head injury such as concussion or a mild traumatic brain injury. PCS persists from weeks to months after the original head injury. Not all people who suffer from head trauma will develop PCS. Risk factors for PCS include previous head trauma, early symptoms of headaches or mental changes after injury, younger age and prior history of headaches, and women.

Signs & symptoms

Post concussion syndrome symptoms are usually vague, not specific, and may induce headache, dizziness, sleep problems, depressed mood, irritability, anxiety, memory problems and difficulty to concentrate.

Diagnosis

It may be difficult to diagnose PCS due to the non specific symptoms, which may be attributed to other causes. Diagnosis is mainly done based on the patient’s history and reported symptoms. Physical examination is done, and sometimes a CT or an MRI scan of the head to rule out other diagnosis.

Treatment

Most people who have post concussion syndrome are advised to rest and minimize stress. Medication to relieve symptoms such as headaches, anxiety or depression may be prescribed.
