Signs & symptoms

The primary symptoms of atopic dermatitis are dry and itchy skin. All body areas may be involved. However, there are typical areas of involvement that are related to age.
Symptoms rage from mild to severe. During flares, which may be triggered by various reasons, the skin is itchier and more red than normal. The itching may cause skin infections further worsening the condition.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is clinical, which means that the diagnosis is based on the physical exam, symptoms and medical history without the need for further testing.

Treatment

The treatment may include
1. Lifestyle changes-Elimination of exacerbating factors is extremely important in order to prevent flares and improve daily life. These include excessive bathing, overheating, low humidity environments and more.
2. Emollients and moisturizers- skin moisturizers are a very important component of atopic dermatitis treatment. They improve the skin barrier and reduce flares.
3. Topical anti-inflammatory therapy with corticosteroids can reduce the itching and inflammation.
4. Oral treatments- Different kinds of oral treatments may be used in order to reduce itching and inflammation
