How do I manage toxic empathy? I always absorb other people's feelings. If my best friend is sad, I'm sad. Sometimes I even become more depressed and out of control than they were in the first place. Everyone else's problems and feelings become mine too, especially the people I love the most. It's fucking horrible and I don't know what to do. I KNOW their emotions aren't mine and I don't need to take them on as such, but I can tell myself that all day and it won't help. I need to know what to do.

I'm still trying to deal with that as well, but I can say the first step is breathing and trying to ground yourself in your moment, instead of someone else's. Focus on yourself and take care of yourself. Sometimes you might have to take care of yourself more than others have to because your are experiencing so much extra emotion. Luck and happiness to you! ❤️

I experience this as well and what helps me is sometimes I need to isolate myself to realign myself with my own feelings instead of others. Personally if I’m feeling overwhelmed by others emotions I walk away for a second and music really helps me to detach and calm down for a minute. Just stop thinking for a second and focus on the music until you feel ready to go back outside. For me music is like an emotional reset button. Also if you’re in a situation where you can’t just walk away, think over those emotions. Just keep telling yourself I am not sad these are not my emotions. When you get home and you’re able to be alone self care is important. Do something that you enjoy doing or do something to distract you from whatever bad emotion you’re feeling. Hope this helps
