Bertolotti’s syndrome is a rare cause for lower back pain and it occurs when the last lumbar vertebra is fused to the sacrum, which creates a false joint. Sometimes, it has no symptoms at all but sometimes it hurts. It happens in 10 percent of the population.

Symptoms may include low back pain that radiates from the sides of the waistline, it does not radiate to the legs. The pain is improved when sitting and laying.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include imaging tests or a diagnostic injection.
Treatment is not always required but may include physical therapy, steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation and in some cases surgical interventions.
