Memory loss (also known as amnesia) may include loss of memories, facts, information and experiences. People who experience amnesia usually know who they are. Memory loss can be either episodic or permanent. It may be caused due to stroke, brain inflammation, long term alcohol abuse, brain tumors, Alzheimer’s disease, seizures and certain medications.

Signs & symptoms

Memory loss symptoms may include difficulty learning new information, which is called anterograde amnesia or difficulty remembering past events, which is retrograde amnesia. Other symptoms may include confabulation, which are false memories made up, confusion or disorientation.

Diagnosis

Memory loss is diagnosed upon findings from medical history and physical examination.Further evaluation may include cognitive tests, imaging tests, and blood tests.

Treatment

Treatment for memory loss depends on the underlying reason and may include occupational therapy, technological assistance, supplements such as thiamin for people who have Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
