Hello! I have TMJ and I absolutely hate the dentist because of it. I have such a hard time keeping my mouth open the whole time. They give me a red block to hold it open and that's helpful but it hurts pretty badly. After the dentist visit I'll be in pain for 12-48 hours. I do use ibuprofen. What do y'all do to make the dentist less painful?

I told my dentist beforehand and he wedged some foam into the side of my mouth to let me relax with it open and it made a huge difference. Ask what options they have for propping your mouth open.

omg it's the worst! it's like nobody mentioned it to the assistants and you just have to suffer for a while š I usually massage afterwards once i'm in the car

Massages are so so so helpful. If it isnāt too painful, jaw exercises sometimes help. When Iām having a really bad flare up ice and heat are almost always good.

My dentist prescribed me flexeril for jaw pain and itās super helpful when my jaw flares up. It does make you super sleepy though since itās a muscle relaxer.

@CasuallyCerebral itās great but so hard to get refills
massage your jaw before and after!! if you put your thumb in your mouth at the back of your cheek and the rest of your fingers on the outside and massage that area it hurts but it loosens things up a lot!!
