How do you deal with chronic migraines and mental illness? Yesterday, I had the worst migraine that I’ve had in 6 months. I spent the day lying in bed in a dark room with sunglasses on and my eyes closed. The room still felt too bright, so my boyfriend covered all the windows with heavy blankets and jackets. He also literally had to spoon-feed me broth because I couldn’t open my eyes to see my food but needed to eat something to take my meds. My hearing got messed up and my ears felt fuzzy and started ringing. It was truly hell. I suffer from several mental health conditions, and all of this caused me to break down. I became irrationally scared that the pain would never end and actually started sobbing. The feeling that I had no control over my body triggered my PTSD. I even had some intrusive suicidal thoughts (all of which were passive and I would absolutely never act on). For those of you who struggle with mental illness, how do you manage it when you have a migraine? It’s like all of my normal coping skills go out the window because I can only think about my pain.

Having support from your loved ones is one of the best ways to get help for the migraine/mental illness flare ups. I also have this and I communicate with my husband and my mom so they can help me. I have what I call my “emergency sensory bin.” I have things that help soothe anxiety like those squish toys to squeeze when I’m in pain or stressed, essential oils that soothe me and help relax my muscles etc

I feel the same way, and you will make it through. I just have to remind myself that in the past every migraine has passed in time, so i just need to be patient
@tmj5000 Thank you. It’s hard in the moment, but I will definitely try to remember this.
I had a really tough time with it when I was younger but after about 10 years of everything I just got used to it
@StormyGirl89 This makes sense. I’ve had migraines for a long time, but ~2 years ago I was put on meds that have made them a lot less frequent. Obviously I’m overjoyed to be getting less of them, but now when I do get them I tend to panic a lot more because it’s like I’m not as used to them now.
