Chronic migraine is defined as having more than 15 episodes of headaches, while 8 of them have migraine features, for more than 3 months. Chronic migraine usually starts with less frequent migraine and develops into chronic. Risk factors include obesity, snoring, mood disorders, excessive caffeine intake, and history of trauma.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms include moderate to severe headache, worsened typically by physical activity, pain on one or both sides of the head, throbbing pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination.

Treatment

Treatment may include lifestyle changes such as losing weight, exercising, not skipping meals, and sleeping well. Medications include painkillers and preventive treatment such as anticonvulsants, beta blockers, and tricyclic antidepressants. There is also calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP).
