Tobacco use disorder, or nicotine dependence refers to not being able to stop consuming tobacco. Nicotine is the addictive chemical found in tobacco, causing pleasant effects on the brain. When trying to quit smoking, symptoms of nicotine withdrawal start. Tobacco use disorder may cause health problems such as different types of cancer, lung diseases, diabetes, stroke, blood vessels disorders and more.

Symptoms include inability to stop smoking, having withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop- anxiety, cravings, depressed mood, increased hunger, insomnia, constipation or diarrhea, and keeping smoking despite health problems.

Treatment includes counseling, support groups, tobacco products, and medications such as nicotine replacement therapy.
