What is it?

The coccyx is a triangular bony structure at the bottom of the vertebral column. Coccyx, or tailbone pain, can be caused by trauma during a fall, prolonged sitting on a narrow or hard surface, degenerative bone changes or a vaginal childbirth. Women are more prone to coccyx pain, because of the wider structure of the pelvis in women.

Signs & symptoms

Coccyx pain (also known as coccydynia) may be dull, and become sharp during activities such as sitting, rising to a standing position or prolonged standing. Pain during defecation, sexual intercourse or menstruation for women may also occur.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made upon findings from medical history, physical examination, imaging tests such as X-ray, CT, or MRI.

Treatment

Treatment may include nonsurgical treatments such as physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, stretching exercises and medications such as pain relievers. Steroids can be given by injection. If the non surgical treatment fails, surgery may be an option as well.
