Binge eating disorder

Binge eating disorder (BED) is a common eating disorder in which a person consumes large amounts of food in a short period of time, with a feeling of loss of control. People who suffer from BED may be embarrassed about overeating. Risk factors for BED include family history of eating disorders, dieting, and psychological triggers such as stress and poor body self image.

Symptoms may include obesity, being overweight, eating an unusual excessive amount of food in a specific amount of time, feeling loss of control, eating even when not feeling hungry, eating fast, eating alone or in secret, feeling depressed, disgusted and ashamed.
Diagnosis of binge eating disorder is usually based on medical history and an interview with the patient. A psychological evaluation may be suggested. Other tests may be done such as physical exams, blood and urine tests.
Treatment includes psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and dialectical behavior therapy to teach behavioral skills to tolerate stress.
