Oral allergy syndrome, also known as pollen- food allergy refers to a condition which is characterized by an allergic reaction to proteins in some foods which may cause itching, tingling and swelling of the mouth, lips and throat. In rare cases, it causes anaphylactic reaction which could be life threatening.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms include itching, tingling and swelling of the mouth, lips and throat after eating certain foods like an apple or a banana. These symptoms usually go away after up to an hour.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include allergy tests which test postive for birch pollen, grass pollen or ragweed pollen, but negative for these foods.

Treatment
