If I get married I don’t want my dad there. It’s hard bc my parents are close and I’m half certain if my dad doesn’t get to go, my mom won’t. I feel like I’m selfish for not wanting a relationship with him. I feel selfish for existing. I only would allow him to attend if he gave up alcohol for good, and I don’t see that happening. I told him one time when he was drunk and we were fighting and he said he didn’t wanna go, but I meant it and he didn’t.

@jwpta1 no one has an obligation to help another at the expense of their own well being. Setting boundaries is important. If she sets that boundary it needs to be respected. This is stuff you learn very early in therapy.

Stop being so selfish... Yes, it's your "day" but maybe your father's problem is not yours. Maybe you should consider helping him out with love vs condemnation. It might be real in the long run.

I completely understand and I don't think you should feel guilty about your decision. I invited my mom but not my step father. They respected my wishes. Your wedding day needs to be as uncomplicated and as happy as it can be for you and your partner.
