Trigger warning: SH////i had a pretty bad relationship with my parents when i was younger, especially my mom. i was verbally abused and often felt like i wasn’t good enough for her and was pushed to the side when my brother was born. when she found out i was self harming she told me i was selfish and didn’t get me help. in general i have a lot of resentment for her. how can i let go of the past and continue moving forward and healing?

So sorry to hear that, it takes a while to let go of things you've been dealing with for a long time. My therapist gave me advice about being your own big brother/sister, but I would say to try and find a therapist to help you confront the emotions and work through it.

So I have the same thing with both my parents and I'm still living with them. I wish I could tell you it gets easier but it doesn't. I found that disconnecting from them and focusing on my friends and my self really helped

I also have a difficult relationship with my mom; I was constantly compared to my older sister and never felt good enough. As i’ve gotten older I’ve just stopped engaging with her, and most of my family, as much. I just do the bare minimum of what’s needed of me. If boundaries start getting crossed on how i’m getting treated I stop responding or don’t answer a phone call, or say I’m too busy to come visit. It’s not always easy but it’s been a lot less stressful to be less engaged than try to be emotionally responsible for them.
