I have an appointment this week to dicuss my chronic illness and my new year's resolution is to be more assertive when it comes to medical care. how do I get the doctor to actually listen and give me the diagnosis I've been told I have, but they won't give me "because there's not much point". I've been ignored for years of struggling so I think there definitely is a point to me finally finding out what's wrong.

@sorenachy update : the doctor was a bit rude about it but after I got a bit angry, she's referred me for genetic testing with an ehlers danlos syndrome specialist in London. We might finally be getting somewhere!

That's a messed up line of thinking. I'm so sorry you are dealing with that

I would ask why they believe there is no point and explain to them why you believe there is. Beyond that, you may just need a new provider. You unfortunately cannot make any doctor do what they do not want to do.

@100Percent_K I am seeing a different doctor this time, but I've just found out it's the one I spoke to last year who refused to acknowledge that I am hypermobile so it might be a bit awkward. The doctor a couple of weeks ago said the reason he wouldn't do it was because there's no funding for treatment after diagnosis other than what they're already giving me.

The doctor says there's not much point to giving you a diagnosis?

@sorenachy yeah, it's because in the area I'm currently living there's no funding for secondary care for what they think I have. They believe that if they can't give me treatment afterwards, there's not much point is spending time on proving a diagnosis.

Based on the experiences shared, some suggestions include being persistent and assertive during your appointment. Clearly express your symptoms, concerns, and the impact they have on your life. If you feel your pain or symptoms are being downplayed, stand up for yourself. It may also be helpful to write down all your symptoms and any treatments that have or haven't worked in the past. Persistence seems key - continue to advocate for yourself until you get the answers you need.
