Went to a doctor at a pain clinic yesterday. He focused on my mental health and was dismissive of my actual pain. He wants to take me off my psychiatric med that's actually working (and is used in treatment of fibro) and put me on a different one entirely. He offered me no medication for pain, not even an NSAID. Additionally, he told me to take less nsaids and to work towards getting off of my muscle relaxer. I have hypermobility syndrome which causes my muscles to spasm badly and injure me if I don't take my muscle relaxer. He put that I have depression on my medical chart even though we didn't talk about depression. Besides getting a second opinion, does anyone have any advice? I feel like I was gaslit by a doctor and therefore feel defeated. How do you guys push through that? If you took the time to read all of this, thank you.

Run far away from that doctor ! Doesn’t sound like he knows what he’s doing

Go in with a printed copy of the office's own patient rights and mission statement, along with legit peer reviewed medical studies proving women's pain and a million other symptoms are written off as mental health related and not treated properly. Me are given pain relief, women get sedatives....

I've been gaslighted by doctors pretty much my whole life. My normal way to cope with it is to rant to my support system. A second opinion is definitely a good idea because that doctor sounds like they aren't actually there for your best interests. If you want to stay with that doctor I would bring someone with you if you can to help support you and don't back down on your points. Doctors aren't infailable and sometimes putting them in their place is what is needed.

I would absolutely ask to see another doctor at that clinic or go to another clinic all together if you can/have too. I just got on here, I have no clue how this works. I've never posted or commented if that's even what it's called but it said we were 76% alike, so I was intrigued.

@Alextricity I asked my doctor for a second opinion and it sounds like she will be sending me to a different pain clinic all together. Thank you for commenting! Feel free to message me. I'm happy to listen to you vent and/or compare treatments that have worked for us.

Don't return to that doctor! He's not a good pain doctor!

@dream6284 I absolutely will not return to him. He was garbage! I reached out to my PCP for a second opinion referral and her message sounds like she will give me one

If you didn't talkabout depression, you can have the doctor take that off your chart. My rheumatologist assumed I take metformin for diabetes. I informed her I've never had diabetes and actually take metformin for a different issue and told her to remove from my chart

@jax1457 that's a great point! I'm going to be talking to my PCP about having it removed off of my chart 😊 thank you!

I've gone through something like this myself. I'm sorry you had that experience. It can be defeating. I agree with everything TheUltimateGinge said. It may take a few tries, but you will find a doctor that will work with you. I suggest a rheumatologist. I live in a small town now and my PCP handles my fibro, but I sure miss my rheumatologist. I wish you the best. Don't lose hope! You'll find someone.

@HowPow thank you so much! 💕 I'm so sorry you went through something similar. I'm glad you ended up finding someone who works for you! Hopefully if you need to talk to your rhumetologist they can do a telehealth appointment 💕

I would definitely get a second opinion and see if you can report the doctor. There is no reason why the doctor should have even commented anything about your depression if it wasn't brought up and I feel like he was pushing you off as a junky.

@babyblueeye yeah I'm worried his attending thought I was drug seeking. My partner is in a wheelchair and was looking at him like I'm trying to get meds for him. Thats great advice! I will look into reporting the doctors I saw. Thank you! 💕

@babyblueeye I agree he's being dismissive and is recommending harmful changes

@PurpleMage yes I think reporting him is going to be my best option. I'm hoping that when I report him I can have the manager add to my chart that he refused to talk about my pain as separate from my mental health. I think unfortunately doctors don't realize that chronic pain causes depression. Sure the depression can be treated but it doesn't help the root cause of the pain.

That makes me so mad for you. I strongly dislike doctors like that, who don't listen and go off on their own tangent instead of listening to you and your very real problems. I've had to tell myself in the past that doctors are human, and sadly still make mistakes and to keep trying to see other doctors who will listen and try to help. I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to help, but my advice is try not to take it to heart and try and get someone who will listen and not railroad you. You deserve the best!

@TheUltimateGinge thank you! I really appreciate that. It's a challenge but I know that as a chronic pain patient, we have to fight for adequate treatment. Thank you so much 💕
