tw/ addiction My psychiatrist prescribed me Ambien after I expressed concern about side effects and withdrawal (since I struggle taking medication consistently). He never told me it was habit forming or that going cold turkey (which I have a history of doing) could cause seizures. He didn't warn me about the "high" it gives and I almost immediately started craving it and upped my own dose (don't recommend) because I didn't trust him. He didn't tell me it was for short term and prescribed it for a month before we met again. I have horrible insomnia and I'm scared that this is my last chance but I also don't want to be dependent on this medication and I'm scared about going off of it. I considered finding a new psychiatrist after this but I'm known to be dramatic so I'm worried I'm overreacting. Have you ever taken Ambien/what was your experience like? Have you ever had issues like this with a psychiatrist and what do you recommend? Any advice is welcomed!

If you don’t feel you can trust your psychiatrist for any reason, it’s probably time to try someone new. Also, if you’ve been with him a long time, a new perspective might be valuable anyway. You say you’re “known to be dramatic” which could mean a lot of things—unless you have a known history of anxiety or paranoia, or specifically having issues with all therapists/psychiatrists, it’s very unlikely that this is a you problem. Patients should always be fully informed on their treatment plan, and the features, risks and side effects of any medication. I haven’t tried ambien so I can’t speak to that part, but I’d really really encourage you to at least try a different psychiatrist. Without trust, rapport, and good communication, it’s exceedingly difficult to get good care.

I have horrible insomnia and this was basically my last shot with medication for treatment. I couldn't just stop taking it but I also couldn't wake up early (4am most days) so by upping the dosage I'm able to stay asleep

I did that's the best part. I addressed it at the last appointment and before I was prescribed it. I expressed my concerns and he brushed them off so I looked up the medication after he had already prescribed it (that was my mistake considering I should've looked it up before)

Ambien made me Jykal & Hyde according to my ex. I said mean things to her at night. Ambien has this known side effect. I would look out for psychiatrists who specialize in pharmacology too. Mine gave me meds to "balance" my mood, unfortunately, it also made me so spacey I was caused some minor accidents while driving. I moved & new psychiatrist took me off all meds except Ritalin that gave me better concentration at work. Also don't let insurance companies tell you you have to try other cheaper meds 1st. If ins won't pay for prescribed meds ask your doctor or psychiatrist to call them. You I would definitely seek out a psychiatrist who explains everything thoroughly!

I take ambien every night. It can be habit forming but you seem very self aware and concerned about that so I doubt you would form an addiction. But after 2 weeks of taking ambien your body will need to be tapered off if you want to stop taking it. I believe it’s more of a rare side effect to have seizures from stopping ambien cold turkey but still not really a risk worth taking. If you have bad memory you can try getting a pill case with every day of the week, that helps me remember I took it so I don’t forget and take another! I don’t think the high you’re experiencing from it is going to hurt you but if it makes you uncomfortable you could try lunesta. Hope this helps!

@Weds as far as remembering meds, med tracker apps can be really helpful, and they even make pill bottle lids with alarms/timers built in.

@aldrwytch thank you! I didn’t know about the pill bottles with timers. I’m definitely going to look into that!

I haven't take Ambien or had a psychiatrist like this but I definitely recommend getting a new psychiatrist after this as they should explained everything about the prescription before prescribing it to you explaining the side effects and how long it'll be taken ect... this psychiatrist wasn't professional in our opinion and recommend definitely looking into transferring to someone else. <3 -Dio

@Dionysus429 thank you for the advice! I've been seeing this psychiatrist since I was 13 and he has a great reputation on paper but in my experience he's been problematic (for example not fully informing me on what he's prescribing)
