Hi, I'm new here. I'm 22 and only realized i was autistic earlier this year. I don't have any friends that are autistic and it makes me feel really alone. I'm scared of being stereotyped, misunderstood and infantilized. I'm scared that i'll live my entire life like this. That i'll never have an autistic friend. I'll be surrounded by neurotypicals who just don't get it, forever. It just makes me feel so alone and isolated and it's really depressing.

This is coming from my experiences, a 22 years old Autistic female. Don't be afraid. Just be you. Those who truly love you will not judge you for Autism. There's sadly nothing you can do about the stereotypes and false rumors, as unfortunately they happen every day. It doesn't matter if you're around or not. The best thing you can do is ignore them. Don't let the rumors or stereotypes bring you down. Just focus on the positives, even when it feels impossible.

I feel this as well. Just this year (Im 24) i put things together alongside how my cPTSD came around. Still unlearning the mask. Its so hard and I hope you find people that you can genuinely connect with as it makes such a difference. Somebody WILL understand you someday. There are so many of us hidden everywhere. That said, your pain and anxiety is very real and valid. Not knowing until youre already an adult and traumatized to bits really messes a person up. We deserve better.

I had my suspicions of my being on the spectrum earlier back in 2018/2019. It is definitely something that's caused alot of anxiety for me, especially with my parents who are PAINFULLY neurotypical. They hardly believe it because we used to volunteer at a local ministry for special needs individuals, including those who are severely autistic (I'm talking like stereotypes. Nonverbal, just kinda wandering around, lots of ticks, etc.) My parents have that engraved in their heads as the only form of autistic, they don't understand its a spectrum. They don't believe me because I mask it so well. I can pass as neurotypical until I get anxious and then I have meltdowns. It's plain to see I'm on the spectrum, I've had alot of autistic people say so and a few doctors as well. All that to say, you aren't alone and I believe you. Don't let anyone tell you shit when they don't understand or go through it, especially neurotypicals.
