What is it?

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) refers to an infection in the reproductive organs of the female including the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries. It occurs throught sexually transmitted diseases, especially Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infections. It could also happen when the cervical barrier is disturbed such as after birth, miscarriage, abortion, during menstruation or when inserting an intrauterine device or during other procedures.

Signs & symptoms

Not all women have symptoms, but symptoms include abdominal and pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, abnormal uterine bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, fever or fainful urination.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and pelvic exam. Further evaluation may include blood and urine tests, fluid samples, and ultrasound. In rare cases, a laparoscopy or endometrial biopsy are needed.

Treatment

PID is treated with antibiotics (for sexual partner as well).
