What is it?

Itchy mouth, or oral pruritus is a common complaint which may be caused due to infections, allergies, and medications. Many times, itchy mouth is associated with oral allergy syndrome, which is food allergy. Itchy mouth can be innocent while it can also be a sign of a life threatening anaphylactic reaction.

Signs & symptoms

Accompanying symptoms may include burning or tingling sensation in the mouth, tongue, throat, swollen lips or throat, runny nose, sneezing, dry cough, watery eyes, and itching or crawling sensation in one or both ear canals.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include vital signs.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause for itchy mouth. If it’s a mild allergic reaction, symptoms usually go away on their own after a few minutes. Antihistamines may be used also. For severe allergic reactions, antihistamines, and sometimes epinephrine are used. Cold sores are treated with antiviral medications, and yeast infections are treated with antifungal pills or mouthwash.
