New daily persistent headache refers to a headache which occurs every day over a long period and is characterized by people remembering vividly how it began for the first time. It could be primary, meaning it has no underlying cause or secondary to bleeding in the brain, blood clot in the veins of the brain, head injury, medication overuse, meningitis, pseudotumor cerebri, spinal headache and temporal arteritis.

Symptoms include remembering the onset of the first headache, and having persistent daily headaches. The pain is usually throbbine, sometimes accompanied by photophobia or vomiting, usually on both sides of the head, and moderate to severe.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include imaging tests of the brain.
Some cases of NDPH are self limiting, and do not require any treatment. Another type is refractory, and does not respond to any treatment. Medications may include anti seizure medications, triptans, muscle relaxants, nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs, SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants.
