Milia are a group of small bumps called milium cyst that appear on the nose and cheeks. It is caused due to accumulation of keratin beneath the surface of the skin. Milia are common in newborns, but may appear at every age. Milia may be caused due to blistering skin conditions, burns, long-term sun damage or steroid cream use, and after procedures of resurfacing procedures.
Symptoms include dome-shaped bumps, yellow or white. It may cause discomfort but it is not itchy or painful.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include skin biopsy, but it is rarely needed.
Treatment may include cryotherapy, deroofing of the cysts, topical retinoids, chemical peels, laser ablation, diathermy, and destruction curettage.
