Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is caused due to H pylori bacteria infecting the stomach and causing a peptic ulcer. It is a very common infection, and most people do not even know they have it because they do not develop any symptoms. H pylori may cause ulcers, gastritis and is even linked with higher rates of stomach cancer.

Signs & symptoms

Most people with H. pylori infection are not aware of it because they do not have any symptoms. SYmptoms may include abdominal ache, a burning sensation in the abdomen, ncausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, and weight loss.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include stool test for the H pylori antigens, or breath test to detect marked carbon molecules.

Treatment

Treatment for H pylori infection includes a combination of antibiotics for several weeks as well as medication that suppress acid such as proton pump inhibitors, and H2 blockers.
