Hiccups happen when the diaphragm contracts involuntarily and causes a sudden closure of the vocal cords. This movement of the vocal cord produces a typical sound. Hiccups may be caused due to consumption of a large meal, alcohol, carbonated beverages, changes in temperature, and swallowing air, but it could also be due to an underlying medical condition. It could be caused due to nerve irritation by a tumor, a cyst, central nervous system damage such as encephalitis, meningitis, stroke, brain injury, or a tumor. Metabolic disorders and drugs such as steroids, tranquilizers, anesthesia, and barbiturates may also cause hiccups.
