Hiccups happen when the diaphragm contracts involuntarily and causes a sudden closure of the vocal cords. This movement of the vocal cord produces a typical sound. Hiccups may be caused due to consumption of a large meal, alcohol, carbonated beverages, changes in temperature, and swallowing air, but it could also be due to an underlying medical condition. It could be caused due to nerve irritation by a tumor, a cyst, central nervous system damage such as encephalitis, meningitis, stroke, brain injury, or a tumor. Metabolic disorders and drugs such as steroids, tranquilizers, anesthesia, and barbiturates may also cause hiccups.

Hiccups are diagnosed upon findings from medical history and physical examination.Further evaluation may include blood tests, imaging tests and endoscopic tests to search for the hiccups reason.
Treatment is usually not necessary.If an underlying medical condition is causing hiccups, treatment of that illness may eliminate the hiccups. If needed, there are medications used to treat hiccups such as baclofen and chlorpromazine. Surgical procedures to block the phrenic nerve are also treatment options.
