What is it?

Benign neoplasms of the ovary is a growth in the ovary that does not spread to other body parts and usually are not life- threatening. The most common benign tumors of the ovary are epithelial tumors that could be mainly cystic, mainly solid, or mixed. Benign stromal ovarian tumors can be functional and create hormones like estrogen and testosterone.These include thecoma, fibroma, and leydig cell tumors. Benign germ cell tumors are usually seen in young women and contain cells that produce the eggs. It may also contain cells from embryonic development. Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid, and are pretty common. These cysts may form during normal ovulation.

Signs & symptoms

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based upon finding on physical examination and US imaging of the ovaries and pelvis.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the symptoms and on the type of neoplasm. Sometimes there is no need to treat it and the doctor may recommend only monitoring. Other times, hormonal birth control pills may be recommended or even a surgical removal of the tumor or of the ovary.
