Alexia is an acquired disorder in which the person is having trouble with reading or understanding what is written. The ability to spell or write is not damaged in people with alexia. Alexia is usually caused due to stroke. In dyslexia, there could be similar difficulties but it is a learning difficulty, which exists from childhood. Risk factors for dyslexia include a family member history of dyslexia or other learning disabilities, premature birth, exposure during pregnancy to drugs, alcohol, nicotine or infections.

Dyslexia symptoms in preschool age include late talking, learning slowly new words, problems forming words correctly, problems remembering or naming letters, numbers and colors. Later in life there could be problems with reading, processing and understanding what people hear, difficulty finding the right words,and spelling. Alexia symptoms include having trouble with reading or understanding what is written.
Diagnosis of dyslexia is based on medical and developmental history, questionnaires, neurological tests, psychological tests and reading tests. Alexia is diagnosed based on the symptoms as well as neuropsychometric tests.
Dyslexia treatment includes educational techniques such as hearing, vision and touch to improve reading skills, and treatments to help and practice usage of phonemes, phonics, reading comprehension, fluency and to build a vocabulary. The sooner the treatment starts the better. Sometimes these children also need psychological and emotional support.
