Confused and Overwhelmed by Racing Thoughts

Does anyone have racing thoughts that don’t feel like your own. i’ll get these thoughts and then immediately i’ll think something that contradicts it. Sometimes i can’t figure out which one is actually what i believe in and it feels like i can’t be sure of anything even the things I believe in because then i’ll get an contradicting thought even though i don’t believe those thoughts.

Yup, absolutely. I used to describe it as having two people in my head arguing with each other.

Sounds just like OCD. If yours hasn’t been like this before there could be certain triggers exasperating the racing thoughts part. OCD also commonly appears with ADHD and can do the same. I have both and what you described is how I wouldve described it before I Found out what it was and learned about it. Remember, a thought is just a thought, not a belief. I hope you are able to relax soon.

100% that’s the obsessive part of OCD it suuuuucks but just remember that they’re just thoughts and they don’t have to mean anything

YOU know which you believe because the outrageous one sounds so foreign. We have OCD because this rando part of our brain goes "BUT WHAT IF..." and over time you get better at going "Wait, no". Because that part going what if is not really you. I once had a therapist tell me OCD people are the most sane of all the mental health issues, and that's because we know what we are doing doesn't make sense. They are INTRUSIVE thoughts, they aren't average or organic, they stand out. You are smart, tell that part of your brain "No, that won't happen. Stop." And walk away from the thing or do or watch something distracting.

Everyone has intrusive thoughts. The only meaning they have is the meaning we give them. But no matter how many compulsions you do or how much you try to disprove the thought OCD will never be satisfied. It will always want more. It's not easy, but the best way to handle intrusive thoughts is just to sit with the uncertainty and anxiety. The anxiety will go crazy at first, but then it will peak and decline. But the key is not doing any compulsions.

I 100% get that, intrusive thoughts are the worst. The important part is don't focus on trying not to think about them, that will only make it happen more. Just let the thoughts happen, acknowledge that they aren't yours, and just let them sit. Try not to act on any compulsions, and even though doing all this may make you anxious, it will ebb and flow and get better with time
