Does anyone have any tips for helping a young child through a panic attack. I think there was one experiencing a panic attack today and I has no clue how to appropriately help get through it and I'd like to be better prepaid to help in case it happens to them again.

Allow/offer them to go to a private area, away from others, if possible. It can be embarrassing & stressful for some children to have other children witness the panic attack.

What jelly said mostly. But what helped me when I was younger was that my sister would just talk to me. That gave me something to ground myself with, and also helped distract me from the panic attack.

Grounding techniques: give them something to smell, something to feel, and something to taste. Ask them if there’s anything that they need in that moment and do what you can to help them feel safe.

One suggestion is to use grounding techniques, such as having the child focus on their surroundings and identify 5 things they see, 4 things they can touch/feel, 3 things they hear, 2 things they can smell, and 1 thing they can taste. This can help keep them present and more in control during a panic attack. Additionally, encouraging deep breaths, offering a cold object like an ice pack for their chest or neck, and providing a calming distraction may also be helpful.
