Any advice on handling medical gaslighting?

Cry in front of them. It's embarrassing but basically being calm and collected (which we try to do because we HAVE to) makes them dismiss you. You have to show a sign of Distress (It's fucked up but we aren't bleeding so they don't know)

Leave and get 2nd/3rd/4th opinions. Demand your tests. I legit was diagnosed with demons by a neurologist before I had a convulsive seizure in front of a Healthcare provider because said neurologist insisted a hallucination I had during an eeg was because of my bipolar disorder instead of of his "no sleep request".

I find a new dr. Thankfully I have a team of specialists who believe me now and are actually diagnosing me. Keep looking!!

Man I wish I had the answer to this. I’m so here for the comments. I’ve experienced this far too many times in my life and I wish I could have handled it with some shred of dignity.

Rebut them. Ask why they are saying why they are. Question their questions. Push back and stand your ground and then change drs I possible because toxic healthcare relationship can be so so damaging. I almost died because of a dr like that.

Call them on it and/or get up and leave the exam room, because you don’t deserve to be treated like that and you shouldn’t have to be polite to protect the feelings of someone who is being rude to you. Also, even when what you’re buying is medical care, you as the consumer have the right to take your business elsewhere if you’re not satisfied with the services you’re receiving. (At least in countries where patients pay for medical care, including the US, where I’m located.) There are medical providers who are compassionate and understanding and will listen to you, even if they can seem harder to find than they should be. ❤️

@Nat_Nat unfortunately this can backfire. My previous rheumatologist came back into the room when I had started crying in private after being told I was fine bc a certain blood test came back negative. His response was “why are you crying?!?!! Do you WANT something to be wrong with you?!” The GA EDS group has a document with doctors we’ve seen that have been great, or are willing to learn, or who are awful. Try finding a local group where you can hopefully find doctors who won’t gaslight you! I’ve also even spoken to a therapist who deals with chronic illnesses to help me not feel like I’m crazy and to help me talk through when it may be time to find a new specialist bc of how they interact.

@Nat_Nat I hate how over exaggerated those of us who have invisible symptoms have to be to get anything out of the medical system.
