I cant help but notice that bdd (body dysmorphia) has become a trend ever since 2020. I am so sick of seeing every girl and their mom on the internet self diagnosing with bdd, it is so invalidating. People like to use this disorder to replace “insecurity” and this is unimaginable to the average person who is insecure. It makes me so upset that so many people take the title of the diagnoses that has ruined my life and they move along like normal human beings. It’s just frustrating, is anyone else noticing or experiencing this?

@Iwantkoreanhotdogs yes it is definitely offensive they do that. Using a mental diagnosis as an excuse for anything is an insult and an downplay towards anyone that actually does have what they are claiming. It makes the expectations much more exhausting for those of us that do have the diagnosis as well.

It certainly feels invalidating to see someone who you compare yourself with and gauge your own BDD as worse. But to me they are posting because they also have issues and maybe trying to seek help in that way. If TikTok or whatever was around when I was a teenager going through the worst of my insecurities I may have done the same thing. I try and give compassion towards others and it helps me be in a better place mentally personally

Real bdd for me is hating everything about my body all the time. Can’t stop thinking about it and trying desperately to change

@Student_girl yes i do understand that. It's like a fly buzzing in your ear nonstop..that painful annoying noise is just stuck in there and never leaves. Can't even look at the mirror longer than 10 seconds without crying or getting angry towards myself. It is quite exhausting.

@em_Jay I didn’t look in mirrors for two years straight and finally a couple months ago I started being able to but it’s honestly still as bad, I’m back in the faze of looking at everything wrong with myself instead of not looking at all

YES! I hate this! There's been a few times when i opened up about my diagnoses and issues and when specifically bdd they'd just say "oh i have this too exactly like that and it isn't that bad" or "i feel like that too but i don't use it as an excuse like you" or when someone tries to give advice by comparing it with how they are but there really isn't a comparison there 😒 I'm glad they have more good days than bad but they really need to stop thinking they have it the same as us that deal with it on a daily because unlike them, we really do have it.

@em_Jay dude seriously, bdd is like a sick trend now. And then people look at the ones who really have it as insane or attention seeking because people downplay and use the disorder to seem “depressed” when they probably can’t even grasp the concept of depression let alone bdd

People are faking so many disorders online and it makes me so so mad. I have multiple physical and mental conditions that have been diagnosed by a doctor, including bdd, and I agree it is so invalidating to have people romanticize and fake them.

@Student_girl THANK YOU, I’ve never heard someone with the actual diagnoses agree with me and that’s because not a lot of people have it. I completely forgot about the romantizing, it’s so true and that come along with people just wanting the attention and pity for something they don’t have, it’s extremely irritating knowing that they get what they want and don’t have to deal with what we do, they can just move on.
