Hello. So I wanted to ask about bariatric surgery. I had a lap band in 2017 that was unsuccessful. A lot of it had to do with habits I wasn’t willing to give up plus a divorce and life events that really kept me in unhealthy patterns. I am 43. I have a 3 year old daughter that needs her Dad. I am about 398 lbs and truly would like to be around 200. I am looking at the sleeve or the bypass. With the lap band a lot of cravings still existed. I still have the hormones that drove the desire to eat. With the lap band I reached a point I had the port unfilled because I was having extreme GERD symptoms. Most of it was my fault forcing food that I knew I shouldn’t have. I’m at a point where I need a way to just physiologically stop me from the binge eating. For those that have had this surgery. What are cravings like? I know if I have the stomach flu the visual of food makes me want to puke. I think one of the reasons the lap band fails is subconsciously you know you can work around it and that if needed it can be removed. What is it like knowing physiologically there is no other option. This is just how it is? I just don’t want to die and I’ve been overweight my entire life. On off days I will sleep 16-18 hours a day. I need to make a change. Do you regret the surgery? Are you glad you did it? What are the barriers I will face? What would be great is if the desire for food was just gone….. I am considering the sleeve and or the bypass

@Nuro with my lap band you can go back to old habits all you have to do is unfill the port of its saline. I view it as I do need a more permanent solution.
I had the sleeve earlier this year. I love it! It kind of taught me a little bit about eating habits. I thought I could still over eat and I might have a tummy ache but that was not the case for me. It has gotten better since surgery, but I have also curbed this habit... If I eat too much, it's not a simple tummy ache. There is a mucus produced in my mouth that just makes me want to vomit. It is also a very unsettling feeling which causes me to never want to do that again. All in all, changing your habits is going to be a very important part of the process.

@Nuro this makes sense. I guess for me the struggle has been breaking the habit. I can do it for a short term. But I struggle maintaining it. The negative reinforcement of what happens if you jack up probably has helped you I’m assuming in staying on path… you screw up your gonna pay for it
If you have extreme GERD, you're going to want the bypass. The sleeve can make Gerd worse. I'm still preop for the bypass. I was going to get the sleeve and had to cancel my surgery when my husband was in an accident. Since then, with more research, I decided on the bypass also due to Gerd.
