i am a high school student with borderline personality disorder. i am very frustrated because i can not stick to a style/aesthetic. i have a very distorted self image and am extremely unfamiliar with myself, which causes me to look like a completely different person every month. it is exhausting. does anyone have tips on how to find yourself? and how to not completely change your personality every week?

@PrettyPolar2 Right, i have a few personality disorders but borderline personalities is front and center. When Neurotypical people hear that diagnosis, they think I have split personalities, and I'm like no, not in the slightest my dear, I'm like in all honesty it's a product of my raising, I don't correct them but insted I have them Google it.

yeah I get that, I used to feel guilty to myself and to others, but now when anyone comments on how I've done every hobby or wear different things I just say "I'm multifaceted". I think of a world traveler that has collected different ideas and cultures.

I am going through the exact same thing. Sometimes I feel equal parts goth and equal parts cottagecore and I feel like I'm confusing everyone around me. embarassing because I can't explain who I truly am because I feel like a bit of everything.

I've been dealing with this for years... I would say I'm dark and bubbly lol I know it's strange, my aesthetic is definitely more of a grunge/boho/cottage-core since... but I describe it as a hippie or a gypsy soul because borderline personality just sounds ugly doesn't it.

@Kmlb5464 yeah I have a hard time with the diagnosis name too, whenever neurotypical people hear any type of personality disorder it is a bad expression.

The best thing I’ve found is mixing everything into your own unique style or aesthetic. That way it’s personal to you and you can be your authentic self ❤️

I was recently diagnosed with BDP and I look back and realize I went through the same thing in school. I have a hard time figuring out if I like things or not. What I do to push through that is make a mental note of everything I enjoyed wearing or doing. Then eventually I am able to create my owe style. Another thing not to be afraid of is dressing for the occasion, you know those people that work out and they are never not wearing athletic clothing? They went to far with solidarity of outer appearance style. In my mind there are so many options constantly because I also have a wandering sense of self. When I am feeling bad about it I just know that I am multi-faceted and that is good and I trust myself to stay in the realm that is healthy and comfortable. In highschool it is normal to fluctuate in style but don't let your brain tell you what you should or shouldn't do (unless you go against the dress code). Let me know if this helps!

@PrettyPolar2 I know I'm not the OP but this was very reassuring, thank you

One suggestion is to find a vibe you connect with most and try to tie your outward appearance towards that vibe. This can help you feel good about yourself and create a sense of stability in your identity. Additionally, seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor can provide guidance on coping with symptoms and developing a healthier relationship with yourself (source: post_id 99966862-DAE5-4B7D-AA98-22D95788065A).
