ADHDers! What's something you do while studying that helps your brain stay engaged? I'm looking for ideas so I have a couple of things I can do while I study for the bar. I normally put on a movie I've seen at low volume, but I have audio that I have to listen to for studying. Coloring seems to be effective but I don't want to spend a whole 8 hours a day coloring while listening to the audio. I've also considered an activity like bike riding, but I need something else to do that's not so active since I obviously can't ride my bike around all day. I'm basically looking for something I can do in bed that is "distracting" enough to keep my mind focused on listening to the audio, but not so distracting that I'm blocking out the audio. I've also had success with driving, but I obviously can't drive 8 hours every time I need to listen to the audio.

Playlist with songs that have good beats (love some 90s hip hop for this) on lowest vol (though my other ADHD friend does this with coral music and Lana del rey on top vol so each to their own)

I graduated college last year and I found that listening to binaural beats on YouTube while studying/doing homework would kind of activate my hyperfocus onto what I actually needed to be doing. I also second what everyone else is saying about fidgets. You can get a bunch to figure out which ones work for you and to be able to switch them out to keep them novel and interesting enough to be helpful. I find I eventually get tired of a fidget after I've been using it for weeks or months

@RainbowNarwhal fidgets don't work for me. I'm bored with them immediately. I've tried them all. It's more that I need to keep my mind engaged on something that's mildly distracting. I'll fall asleep if I use a toy.

Ooh! Ok study questions! Do you follow any Lawtubers? They've talked about bar study tips. Colors help. Try to use one color per subject or concept. That way you can help job your memory by thinking of that highlighter. Same thing with smell. You can use those sented lip glosses or kids scented markers. For me writing longhand keeps information in my brain. Even if I took notes by typing in class, handwriting them later helped. Look up Emily D Baker. She just did a quick run down of how to bar study. Her biggest advice was plan backward. Most people plan their day around studying. She says plan things you know you need first. If you know you need 9 hours of sleep to feel your best block that off first. Then block off meals. Block off a couple hours a week for exercise or walks to clear your mind. Then pick one hour that is just for you. You need something to keep you motivated. So maybe Friday night you get one movie or crafting or whatever. Then you can study in all the space around it knowing you will have the energy to retain what you read. It doesn't do any good if you are too tired or hungry to remember. Meal prepping is good too. Slow-cookers are great. You can set it and forget it. As long as it doesn't dry out you can literally "overcook" by hours. It just means your roast turns into stew. Lol. You can pre-portion and freeze meals so you aren't stressed about cooking as much

I agree, I love to play a really simple mobile game. The simpler the better. Needs to be engaging and keep your fingers moving, like merge or connect games but with little to no reading to do (or it can at least be ignored). Problem is you need a lot of them so that you can keep rotating through them once your energy or lives depletes 😆

@Boudicca And if you use Mistplay like me, you can earn gift cards at the same time 😁 although that does contribute to me getting more Uber eats 😅

@Boudicca I started using flow and a scavenger hunt game and that kept me pretty occupied. Thanks!

@lemonjuice I was gonna say I knit and crochet basic scarves since they don't require attention once you get the rhythm.

I sometimes play simple mobile games with the sound off that doesn't require too much thought, it's visual and tactile. However it does distract too much sometimes, so I have to rewind what I'm listening too. As mentioned by yourself Nd others, finding a tactile hobby/craft will likely help and make you feel satisfied. Maybe pick up a few in classic ADHD style and switch between them so you don't get bored? Sculpting, knitting, wood carving, lino cutting for prints, model making/painting, sewing, weaving etc. There are some quite physical crafts out there, just depends on what you can do where you live. I have the opposite situation where I listen to a lot of audiobooks whilst doing my physical job so I stay focused.

Pop its or I don't think there's anything wrong with coloring. Note taking/doodling? Like I take notes to keep my focus and only occasionally relook at the.

when it comes to audio, sometimes having something in your hand helps. some people crochet because it helps them, others might have a fidget or something soft to rub, etc. maybe having something in your mouth. doesn't have to be food, as long as you're not hurting your teeth. walking or going out and laying in the grass. cooking something simple, like a soup, something that doesn't require so much attention. hope you found this helpful!!

@MilkJoey I'm going to try laying in the grass next time I'm getting to my brain's capacity. That always helps me when I'm overwhelmed so hopefully it will help when my brain is at capacity. That's a great idea. Thank you!

Some suggestions from people with ADHD include setting timers for focused work periods followed by breaks, using fidget toys or objects to keep hands occupied, and taking short walks or engaging in other light physical activities during breaks. Additionally, listening to music or background noise like a thunderstorm app can help some individuals stay focused while studying.
