i can't sleep. for about a month while i was off of uni, i actually had some of the best sleep in about a year. but classes started again and now i'm suddenly finding myself completely unable to rest. i feel extremely anxious. my body feels restless and tightened up. my mind is racing and i keep worrying about unrelated things one after another. on top of that i get more frequent and out-of-the-blue thoughts about self-hate, hurting myself, and my memories of being assaulted as a kid. i'm actually trying to give myself better sleep and rest this year—last year was really bad for my sleep patterns—and i've already run into this unidentifiable roadblock. i just want some real, consistent, good nightly rest. it really sucks i'm struggling to get there this week. i'm worried how it'll affect me the next few days and/or get worse. i feel so defeated.

Hello 👋 my name is Ayden While reading your message I begin to think of some of the methods I use to try and have better sleep and lower my anxiety. I want you to know that you’re not alone in this. No need for harm, friend. It’s obvious to me that you’ve started the first stage of a method I use, which is to acknowledge and become aware of the feelings/thoughts/mental formations that appear when you are in the state of suffering (however that manifests, whether it be harmful ideas for oneself or past painful memories) So now that you are aware of what are you feeling and thinking, you can begin to “exercise” your will. Like picking up a sword, use your intent to “duel” these feelings. Use your intent to discover the power of breath. Have the idea of what you want for yourself and trust that you are worthy of it(even if It feels a bit phony) trust and believe, with as much as you can, in your intent. Now that you’ve wielded an arrow (an arrow of trust and belief) follow a guided breath work meditation and allow your arrow to be set and released to its target. The target being your ideal restful state. YouTube has many guided meditations up so start there and find a video that works the best for you.

With the intrusive thoughts you’re describing it sounds very similar to OCD. I’m not a doctor so I don’t wanna diagnose you but just know you are not your thoughts. There’s the intrusive, emotional side of your brain and there’s the logical side that tells you this isn’t real. Keep your head up! Things will get better, it just takes a lot of effort to get there
