Hi everyone, I’m scheduled to have a lumbar disectomy in two places on Wednesday and I am utterly and completely terrified. I’ve had degenerative disc disease since 2018 and I’m hoping this surgery will finally bring me the relief I’ve been hoping for but I’ve also heard very different things. If you have any comforting advice I would love to hear it. :(

I had a similar surgery in September of 2021. I also have DDD. I will say that the surgery relieved 80-90% of my pain depending on the day. If I overexert myself, the pain returns but nowhere near the level it was prior to surgery. I’ve been told by my surgeon the only way to really gauge how successful the surgery was is a year post op, so I’m not there yet. I’ve done some PT, I definitely have some issues with my left side/hip because I spend so much time using my right leg to balance pain when standing, sitting etc. Surgery itself.. I had a lot of anxiety prior but it was quick & easy. The initial recovery is a little nerve wrecking.. just constantly making sure you don’t move in certain ways, twist, lift too much. However - I wasn’t able to most of that prior to surgery so it wasn’t that big of a change. I managed pain with OTC meds if that gives some perspective. From a pain aspect post surgery, you feel like a brand new person. Just be careful, take it slow. Even if your doctor doesn’t recommend PT right way, ask for it. Good luck! You will do great.

I was diagnosed with the same condition back in 2010 at 22 and have had 3 microdiscectomies since, and each time has aided in immense relief. I recently learned that discectomies don't always last forever, especially with DDD with the discs slowly and consistently always wearing down, but it totally depends on your specific condition. I'm looking at an inevitable fusion within the next year or so, but the series of microdiscectomies over the last 12 years has aloud me to avoid fusion and have a very full life. Go to physical therapy once recovered!! Can't stress that enough. A doc may tell you it's not necessary, all three times I did it voluntarily and it helped sooo much!! Wishing you all the best 🙌 rooting for you!

Dont worry, my 2 brothers did it. They said it's so worth it. I did 2 surgeries, I'm still recovering from the 2nd. I'm happy so far. Make sure you have the right doctor.
