Hey, I could really use some outside eyes on my current predicament. I want to see if I'm being ridiculous or if what I'm asking for is reasonable. I work somewhere I thought would be accommodating and had no issues till recently. When I was hired, I was told they prefer I wear the uniform shirt but that I could wear a plain black shirt instead. I let the manager know then that I struggle with crew neck t shirts and will probably wear a black vneck. Last week, I was asked to only wear the uniform shirt. I mentioned that I really can't wear them, had that convo with the manager previously, and I can get a doctor's note if it's a problem. The managers agreed. When I mentioned getting a doctor's note to my mom, she said they'll fire me for being too high maintenance. I just want to know if anyone else agrees with her or if anyone could help me understand why this would be high maintenance.

      It's illegal for them to fire your for your disability. I'd say to get the note and get the accommodation. If they do fire you for your disability, you could start a legal case. If you're worried about it, I'd suggest noting every little suspicious thing just in case. It helps if it's time stamped too. Maybe have a Google Doc and type the exchange as exactly as possible whenever something unfair or underhanded happens.

      So like not only is it not high maintenance to want accommodations, it's illegal for them to fire you over a disability. On top of that it seems like your managers also don't think that way, if they were going to fire you over you getting the doctors note so you can wear a shirt you function in they wouldn't have agreed to it in the first place, they probably just need something to show *their* bosses so they won't get shit for it either.

      Your mother is the one being ridiculous. An employer absolutely would not fire you, because you could be well within your rights to sue them for disability discrimination and wrongful termination.

      No offense but your mom is really wrong here. My mom can’t wear normal shoes, she has to wear sandals. Since it’s part of her disability, the company she works for has to allow it as that kind of thing falls under the ADA. If your doctor says “so and so has to wear clown shoes due to their disability” your employer must comply. (Don’t take this as legal advice as I’m not a lawyer and this is the information that I have come across)

      You have a very reasonable request and as the comment above says its illegal to fire you for your disability. It is also illegal for your workplace to not give you accommodations its also illegal to not follow those accommodations. You are not high maintenance. Your mom might think its too high maintenance because accommodations for working aren't common knowledge.

      Get the accommodation. Any request that allows you to work without discomfort / undue stress and doesn't put undue stress on your employer is protected under ADA. You're not being high-maintenance in the slightest, and it's horrible for your mother to impose such an idea on you.       it's silly that they're making you get a doctor's note, especially because you already spoke to the manager about it, and this is such a small thing, they should just allow it. but if a doctors note is what they need, then definitely do it, it's not high maintenance to take care of yourself

        @curtain I've already started that. I'm a trans man and they've done some things that are definitely dangerous for any trans person working there too. I was planning on just filing it with HR in case someone has a problem later because it's not enough to do anything alone. I'll put this and anything that follows with it :)

      It’s only high maintenance if you let their judgement affect your mood, as that’s all they are seeing, they aren’t seeing the sensory issue because they don’t experience it. Stand your ground, be true.
