Anyone else forced to work because you aren’t “disabled enough” or just can’t afford to not work? I’m tired of my job not being accommodating and being forced to do more work than my coworkers.

I just wish my work could understand that my limitation makes me different from my coworkers but not less than them. If I was in a wheelchair I feel like they would act like it's a personal grudge toward them that I couldn't walk or would need help getting things from the top shelf.

It makes me so frustrated that you have to jump through so many hoops, just for someone to decide how disabled they think you are. I’ve been denied twice, both times because they decided there was substantial work I could still do; if that’s the case, please direct me to jobs that suit my needs, is what I want to say back. Unfortunately, I have three career counselors working with me, but have still not been able to find a position that will meet my qualifications. It really sucks, because I want to be able to do good work and not have to call off all the time when I’m in pain. But I’m just not getting good positions that don’t exacerbate symptoms. I second the above advice to find an attorney and appeal your denial; from what I’ve heard this is sometimes the only way for people to actually get on disability. Also, you’re going to want to have at least a doctor who can vouch for your symptoms. They want tangible evidence, like tests and diagnoses, because that matters more to them than our word. It’s bs, but it’s good to go into it knowing a little how the process works.

My husband has this problem. Before we got married he couldn't get on disability because he's not "disabled enough". I don't get it. He's in pain all the time, and can't work more than 4 hours at a time. It's super frustratinf

@JaiJai my dad has degenerative disk disease and had to fight for years to get disability. He still needs to regularly get X-rays to prove he still has it (it's incurable)

@Hobgoblin that's literally insane. Why is disability so difficult for people who need to get on it to get it?

My (hopefully soon to be ex) therapist told me she didn't think it was necessary to look into an adhd diagnosis or disability for my bipolar disorder because I'm "too high functioning and there wouldn't be any help for me anyways as an adult". I hate the stigma around high functioning, because I may be able to get everything done but the mental stress im under and the mess my life is behind closed doors deserves recognition and help too. While mental disabilities are different than physical and I'm not sure which you mean, I understand the lack of sympathy and understanding in work/school areas. It sucks.

@Hobgoblin I have physical and mental health issues. Both prevent me from getting a job let alone holding one down. 95% of my days are bad. Rarly a good functioning one. And I totally get what your saying about the stigma. It's Bs.

I can't even get a job, I can't make it thru interview. Yet with all my crap I'm not "disabled". I tried applying and got denied. So basically really on my husband's income for a family of 5. So I'm a stay at home mom. We are drowning without me working but I can't.. I just can't.
