TW SA Has anyone worked with a therapist to confront PTSD from SA? I did a r*pe trauma program a few years ago, but I'm coming up on 5 years since I was SA'd and I keep breaking down... I'm almost 30 and still haven't told my parents. I think they could help me financially if they knew, but I'm so scared of breaking their hearts or sending one of them into a stroke from the news. I don't know what to do...

I work on and off to adress my trauma with my therapist, it can take a really long time to get a handle on. Trauma and trauma related disorders are very complex and while you can see improvements during treatment and those will make your life noticeably and significantly easier, I've been told it may take up to 10 years to get to a point that you no longer have trauma responses. Having a support system can really really help, it doesn't have to be your parents yet, or at all if you think you'll be okay without telling them, although if the financial support and emotional support is something big you need I would suggest writing out a letter to them. But if that's not an option instead try support groups, friends, other family members, etc might be helpful to open up and get advice. The are also a number of therapies and treatment options so if you feel one isn't working for you then you can look into a different option.

I have addressed interpersonal trauma with my therapist, including experiences of S/A, but i often clam up once we even slightly dive into the topic. its never too late to get help. I understand all too well how hard it can be to talk to your parents about something like that. My parents only found out when I was 16 years old and was hospitalized after an attempted suicide. We didn't discuss it at all and I think, in the end, that sort of put a weight on them. I didn't communicate with them about it at all. I think the best way to tell them would be via a letter. I am not able to talk about my trauma out loud whatsoever, however I can broadly explain it in writing. A therapist would definitely help with telling your parents about it, but a therapist isnt always easy to get. Good luck and please stay safešŸ’•šŸ’• you are very strong for surviving all of this.
