Vasomotor rhinitis refers to a condition which is characterized by dilatation of blood vessels inside the nose, leading to swelling and congestion. It is not completely understood what causes these blood vessels to dilate but some triggers have been identified. These triggers include irritants (perfumes, smog, smoke), dry weather, viral infections, spicy food, some medications, overuse of nasal sprays, pregnancy, hypothyroidism and stress.
