Tympanosclerosis is a condition of the middle ear and the tympanic membrane in which there is hyalinization and calcification of the connective tissue. These changes result in hearing loss. The cause for tympanosclerosis is not well understood but it could probably be caused due to long term otitis media, insertion of tympanostomy tube and atherosclerosis. Tympanosclerosis is also connected to cholesteatoma, but the relation between the two is not understood.

Symptoms of tympanosclerosis may include gradual hearing loss and white patches on the middle ear or tympanic membrane.
Diagnosis of tympanosclerosis may be established due to complaints regarding hearing deterioration. Then, the audiometry exam may be done. In addition, a CT may be used to search for a disease in the middle ear.
Treatment of tympanosclerosis could include either surgical procedure, by excision of the sclerotic areas and hearing aids.
