What is it?
Tenosynovitis of the hand and wrist refers to inflammation of the tendons in the thumb and wrist. It may be caused due to injury, or overuse. It may get worse if fluid is being built up in the tendon sheath. If it occurs in the thumb, it is called De Quervain’s tenosynovitis.

Signs & symptoms
Symptoms may include pain when using the hand and wrist, pain along the thumb side of the wrist, catching or clicking sounds when using it, swelling, and fluid build up.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include imaging tests.
Treatment
Treatment includes rest, not using the wrist and thumb. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may help and some physical therapy.
