What is it?

Selective IgM deficiency is an immune system condition in which the person lacks immunoglobulin M, while all other immunoglobulin levels are normal. Immunoglobulin M is a protein that is part of the immune system. This condition is rare, and may occur as a primary condition (on its own), or combined with other conditions (more commonly). People with selective IgM deficiency tend to suffer from other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

Signs & symptoms

Diagnosis of selective IgM deficiency is suspected when there are recurrent infections, autoimmune diseases, chronic diarrhea or a combination of these conditions. To establish the diagnosis, blood tests should demonstrate undetected IgM levels.

Diagnosis

People who have selective IgM deficiency may experience recurrent infections (ear, bronchitis, sinusitis, pneumonia), diarrhea, skin rash, allergies and asthma.

Treatment

There is no cure for IgM deficiency. treatment is by treating the symptoms, for example- treating recurrent infections with prophylactic antibiotics.
