Signs & symptoms

Some patients will experience frequent urination, intense thirst and weight loss.

Diagnosis

Blood sugar levels will be measured in one or more of the following methods: Hemoglobin A1C test, Fasting blood sugar test, glucose tolerance test or random blood sugar test. If a diagnosis is made, further blood tests and urine tests may be done, to check for diabetes complications.

Treatment

If the diabetes was caused due to medication use- if it is possible, it is recommended to stop using the drug. Keeping a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, quitting smoking and exercising may lower the risk for developing high blood sugar levels. In addition, there are several types of medications to treat diabetes: - pills that help your body produce more insulin or make insulin do its job better. - injectables insulin – long or short acting
