The abdomen is divided into four quarters. Right upper quadrant pain refers to pain in the area that contains the liver, gallbladder, right kidney and some of the intestine. There are various conditions which may cause right upper quadrant pain such as hepatitis, liver abscess, liver cancer. gallstones, cholangitis, kidney problems such as kidney stones or pyelonephritis, pancreatitis, pneumonia, shingles and more. Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include blood and urine tests, stool culture, endoscopy, abdominal US, CT, MRCP, ERCP and MRI. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include rest,pain relievers, antacids,antibiotics, or even surgery.
