Prognathism refers to congenital protrusion of the upper, lower or both of the jaws. It may be mandibular prognathism, meaning the lower jaw sticks out further than the upper jaw, maxillary prognathism, which means the upper jaw sticks out farther than it should or bimaxillary. Causes may include acromegaly, Crouzon syndrome, basal cell nevus syndrome, acrodysostosis and down syndrome.
Symptoms may include chewing difficulties, speech problems, bruxism, tooth erosion, overbite, dislocated jaw and breathing difficulties.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include X Rays and dental impressions.
Treatment includes surgery.
