Polycystic liver disease is a rare condition characterized by growth of cysts in the liver. If these cysts grow big, or occupy large spaces of the liver, it may cause pain and discomfort. It is caused either randomly or due to a genetic disorder. Also, it is more common in people who suffer from polycystic kidney disease. Most people do not know about having this condition if it does not cause any symptoms.

Symptoms may include bloating, abdominal pain, early satiety, shortness of breath. Complications may include bleeding or infection of the cysts as well as bile duct obstruction.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include imaging tests such as ultrasound and genetic testing.
Treatment is not needed in case there are not any symptoms. If the cysts cause pain or discomfort aspiration or fenestration of the cysts may be performed. If many cysts are located on the same area of the liver, this area may be resected.
