The plica is the membrane that protects the knee joints. When the plica becomes inflamed it is called plica syndrome. It is more common among athletes, runners and bycycle riders. It may also happen due to trauma or injury.
Symptoms include pain above the joint line that worsens after bending, squatting or climbing stairs, localized swelling, clicking, popping or reduced range of motion. Other symptoms may include catching sensation when standing for a prolonged time, feeling unstable on slopes and stairs and difficulty sitting for a long time.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination. Further evaluation may include a knee MRI.
Treatment includes rest, ice compresses, NSAIDs, steroid injection and physical therapy. If conservative treatment does not help, a surgical procedure named arthroscopic resection may be needed.
